According to Forbes Mexico, Microsoft began operations in its Central Mexico Data Region in Querétaro this year. This Region aims to provide storage infrastructure to support the cloud operations of Mexican companies.
With the recent launch of Bing as an Artificial Intelligence search engine, the need for support infrastructure has become essential for Microsoft. According to Forbes, “Microsoft‘s cloud is powered by hundreds of interconnected global data centers that securely deliver content and services on its trusted Azure platform.”[i]
Microsoft has developed a global cloud that spans over 60 data center regions in 140 countries to meet the growing computing needs worldwide. In the case of the Querétaro Region, it would be the second one in Latin America (alongside the one in Brazil).
Features of Central Mexico
This Central Data Region is structured into three availability zones to deploy Microsoft‘s essential cloud services: Azure, M365, and Dynamics 365. Additionally, this Region will benefit users with data residency in Mexico, dedicated connectivity, lower latency, and compliance with international standards.
Datacenter regions differ from singular clusters in their modular structure as they require multiple buildings. In the case of Central Mexico, with three availability zones (physically separated), each zone has one or more data centers equipped with independent power, cooling, and networks.
Benefits of Central Mexico
According to Microsoft, the main benefit of this project is to strengthen the connectivity infrastructure in Mexico, leading to the digital transformation of companies. In this regard, enabling a more efficient network deployment reduces latency and maintains critical data and information residency within the national territory.
Another benefit is the acceleration of online navigation, reducing the physical distance information travels. According to Juan José Delgado, Director of Digital Innovation at Microsoft Mexico, the advantages for individual users are considerable. Still, the most significant benefit would be for companies transitioning to the digital economy.[ii]
Central Mexico: An Opportunity for Innovation
Microsoft‘s innovation efforts ensure data integrity, security, and availability. In this sense, they must integrate “the highest standards of multi-layer protection along with encryption functions and physical security within the facilities.”[iii]
Furthermore, Microsoft is committed to innovation to reduce environmental impact and resource consumption. In this regard, they have chosen mechanical coolers using water for air cooling through evaporation and liquid cooling.
Appropriate Infrastructure in the State
Among the advantages for which the state of Querétaro has been chosen to install this Data Region are its communication infrastructure, energy, security, and access to qualified human resources.
It’s important to note that, according to INEGI (Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography), industrial activity in Querétaro increased by 2.8% in 2022 compared to the previous year. Additionally, the sector that showed the best performance was the manufacturing industry, with a growth of 3.97%. Meanwhile, the electricity generation and distribution sectors, water supply, and gas registered an increase of 3.07%. Based on these indicators, it’s evident that industrial activity in Querétaro had an excellent performance in the past year, despite the aftermath of the pandemic and global inflation.
At IP Consultores, we understand that Querétaro’s economic development requires public policies that ensure the best infrastructure for industrial activities. Furthermore, supporting sustainable projects that guarantee a high economic impact for all population sectors is essential.
Finally, with this entry on our blog, we introduce a new series called “Querétaro I+E,” which aims to showcase the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem of the state of Querétaro. This state is poised to become the technological revolution hub in the Americas and the Caribbean in the 21st century.
